Roadable aircraft: flying cars you can also drive
The 7 vehicles we track that drive on roads and fly: what each costs, how far it has got and the takeoff it needs. Checked October 17, 2026.
Three of the seven are designed to take off vertically (XPeng Aridge Land Aircraft Carrier, Alef Model A and ASKA A5); the others need a runway or airstrip. Four take pre-orders, but none is being delivered to customers yet. The AeroMobil 4.0 is grounded.
Tesla's flying Roadster isn't on this list: its thrusters made seconds-long hops, and it isn't an aircraft. See what Tesla showed and what's real.

Questions people ask
What is a roadable aircraft?
A roadable aircraft, usually called a flying car, is a vehicle that can be registered to drive on public roads and also flies. Most fold or stow their wings or rotor to drive and need a runway to take off; the XPeng Aridge Land Aircraft Carrier, Alef Model A and ASKA A5 are designed to take off vertically.
How much does a roadable aircraft cost?
Stated prices run from about $200,000 for the Samson Sky Switchblade as a kit to $1.2 million for the Klein Vision AirCar (company estimate). Taxes, training and insurance are extra.
Can you buy a roadable aircraft today?
You can reserve one: the XPeng Aridge Land Aircraft Carrier, Alef Model A, ASKA A5 and Samson Sky Switchblade take pre-orders or deposits. None is being delivered to customers yet; the earliest promised deliveries are in 2026, from the XPeng Aridge Land Aircraft Carrier and Alef Model A. Dates in this industry have slipped repeatedly.
Do you need a pilot's license to fly a roadable aircraft?
In most cases, yes. In the US the PAL-V Liberty, Klein Vision AirCar, Samson Sky Switchblade and AeroMobil 4.0 need a pilot certificate to fly, and any drive-and-fly car also needs a driver's license on public roads. Rules for the XPeng Aridge Land Aircraft Carrier, Alef Model A and ASKA A5 aren't settled yet; each model's page has the details.
